The Authoritative Source for Publishing and Finding Health Product Declarations
Today, Health Product Declarations® (HPDs) become publicly available via the HPD Public Repository. The Repository has been developed as a free, public resource by the HPD Collaborative (HPDC), a not-for-profit member organization responsible for the HPD Open Standard’s maintenance and evolution. Over 1,800 HPDs have already been published to the Repository by product manufacturers.
HPDs are the easiest and most precise method for reporting and finding detailed technical information about the contents and associated health-related attributes of building products. HPDs are created by product manufacturers, using the reporting format of the HPD Open Standard, a voluntary industry standard. With the HPD Public Repository, users – architects, designers, contractors, engineers, building owners and managers – will be able to search for and download PDF copies of HPDs. This service is provided by the HPDC at no cost to both manufacturers and those searching the database.
Public access to completed HPDs is an important component in transparency and disclosure practice. Certifications and tools designed to support the use of material health information in projects – such as LEED v4 – may require the use of publicly-accessible HPDs.
“Up until now, it has been very challenging for project teams to determine which HPDs are publicly available. The Repository offers an easy-to-use, cost-effective solution to this problem,” commented Alison Mears, Director, Healthy Materials Lab, Parsons School of Design.
“As a manufacturer, this will make our HPD work much easier,” said Lisa Britton, Director of Sales & Marketing/Sustainability Champion, Industrial Louvers, Inc. “Because we can automatically publish our HPDs directly from the HPD Builder tool, and get a public link to the finished PDF, we can save a number of steps and don’t have to worry about maintaining the most current version of our HPDs on our own website.”
The Repository gives product manufacturers a mechanism to make their published HPDs widely available to the building industry and others interested in transparency and health in building products. For project teams, the Repository simplifies the process and cost of searching for information needed for product selection and specification, and obtaining documentation needed for meeting the Material Ingredient credit requirements of certification systems such as LEED v4 and WELL.
